Hiking to the summit of Mount Greylock via the Thunderbolt Trail takes you through some of the East Coasts most hallowed ski terrain and across the rugged Appalachian Trail and is the steepest and shortest route to the highest point in Massachusetts. Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. Pets must be on a leash and attended at all times.
1 mile US 5280 feet. Motorized vehicles are not allowed except winter use by snowmobiles on the designated trail to access the Mount Greylock State Reservation only when there is at least a 4 inch packed base of snow. However there is camping along the Appalachian Trail which travels 90 miles through Massachusetts.
Trails at Greylock Glen are intended for walking hiking mountain biking snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Trailhead is at the end of West Mountain Road in Greylock Glen. There may be fees for some campsites and the most popular spots may require making reservations.
Before a state park the area was farmland between the 1760s and early 1900s. Mount Greylock is generally a day hike. It is a fun hike not one of my favorites but worth the experience.
